Eixample definition

Eixample in Catalan means extension and it was constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as an enlargement of the “Ciutat Vella” (the Old City) to connect it to the nearby villages within the plateau between the sea and the Collserola hills. This major urban expansion project, conceived by Ildefons Cerdà in 1859, was executed after demolishing the medieval walls due to the high population pressure and poor sanitary conditions that were experienced in the Old City. The Eixample district is divided today into six administrative neighbourhoods. The “Antiga Esquerra” (Old Left) was the first part of the Left Eixample to be urbanized.
