Dissonance definition

Dissonance means “the existence of nonfitting relations among cognitions”, whereas “cognition” relates to “any knowledge, opinion, or belief about the environment, about oneself, or about one‟s behaviour” (Festingers, 1957, p. 3).

Dissonance means disagreement or discrepancy (Festinger 1957; Fishbein & Ajzen 1975). A basic assumption of Cognitive Dissonance Theory (Festinger 1957) is that any kind of cognitive inconsistency is uncomfortable for people. When a cognitive inconsistency occurs between an individual’s inner perception of an object and outer information about that object, they feel uncomfortable and try to move away from the dissonant state. The greater the discrepancy, the greater the dissonance is evoked (Festinger 1957; Sherif et al. 1965; Triandis 1971).
