Cybernetics, definition

Cybernetics, then, means more originally the capability of making ethi- cal judgments in the face of specific and diverse contexts, complete with the ability to self-correct in the face of error and/or new information. This is to say, the cybernetes, as a model of ethical self-direction, thereby embod- ies and exemplifies the sort of ethical judgment that Aristotle subsequently identifies in terms of phronesis—i.e., precisely the ability to discern what general principles may apply in a particular context—and how they are to be interpreted to apply within that context as defined by a near-infinite range of fine-grained, ethically relevant details.
