Competence development. The opportunity to develop in one’s professional role through, for example, different forms of training, courses and other measures that are intended to raise the competence level and engagement of the individual and within the organisation. Managers and employees hold annual performance appraisals to discuss how the employee can develop in their professional role at the same time as contributing to the organisation’s overarching goals. The organisation is responsible for implementing development measures for the employee, and for ensuring that the conditions are created to realise the agreed plans. This development may occur through a formal education program, continuing education, and clinical practice, and is expected to continue throughout the practitioners’ career.

Strategically implemented competence development therefore benefits both the employee and the business. Consequently, competence development should be assessed in the salary formation process. Competence development instructed by the employer is regarded as work and shall be compensated in accordance with the applicable collective agreement.
