Canine handler assignments may be filled by a non-bargaining unit member; however, this section specifies the terms and conditions of employment when/if the position of canine handler is filled by a bargaining unit member.
Section 20.6 In addition to all other contractual benefits to which they are entitled, individuals assigned as tactical team members or negotiators of the Special Operations Team, Underwater Search and Recovery Team, Bomb Squad, Motorcycle Squad, full-time Firearm Instructors, and employees regularly assigned as a Canine handler shall receive an additional allowance of seventy-five ($75.00) dollars per month for the purchase of special clothing and equipment required within these units.
Canine handler pay shall be the exclusive compensation for the off-duty care and maintenance of the canine.
Canine handler pay is not eligible for compensatory time as defined in Article 8(7)(C) of this Agreement.
Canine handler hours (i.e., three and one half hours per week) will count as time worked for purposes of calculating overtime in the eighty (80) hour work period but will not be included towards the hours or major fractions thereof worked in excess of the daily shift as provided in Article 8(7)(A) of this Agreement.
Canine handler training activities shall continue to be conducted on- duty.
Canine handler care activities shall be compensated by relieving the handlers from all regular work duties one (1) hour prior to the end of the handler’s regular daily shift.
In lieu of the additional pay, on days when the Canine handler is scheduled to work a regular shift, the handler shall be excused 30 minutes prior to the end of the regularly scheduled shift, subject to work load as determined by the supervisor.
The Accelerant Canine handler and the US&R Team Canine handlers (number determined by the Fire Chief) will be paid a 5 five percent % specialty pay when the handler is assigned a dog.
In addition to the Canine handler pay described above, assigned Canine Handler’s shall be assigned a home retention vehicle, for the sole purposes of transporting their police service dog to and from work.
