Biomagnification definition

Biomagnification means the process of bioconcentration and bioaccumulation by which tissue concentrations of bioaccumulated chemicals increase as the chemical passes up through two or more trophic levels. The term implies an efficient transfer of chemical from food to consumer, so that residue concentrations increase systematically from one trophic level to the next (USEPA 2000c).
Biomagnification means the incremental process through a food chain by which progressively higher contaminant concentrations are attained in organisms located at respective higher trophic levels in the food web.
Biomagnification means the increase in tissue concentration of a pollutant in aquatic organisms at successive trophic levels through a series of predator-prey associations, primarily occurring through dietary accumulation.
