Biodegrable definition

Biodegrable means that the material is capable of being broken down by the action of living things such as microorganisms. “Edible” means that the material is safe to eat. “Coating” is a layer of one substance covering another, in this case, covering a food product. The purpose of coating of a food product are to improve quality of the food and extend the shelf life of products by acting as a barrier (gas and/or moisture) or providing gloss (shine) (Hang-wan, et al. 2007). Edible packagings have functional properties, which are selective and active properties. Selective properties of edible films and coatings are illustrated in Figure 2.5.
