Amerindian definition

Amerindian is defined in section 2 of the Amerindian Act as any citizen of Guyana who belongs to any of the native or aboriginal peoples of Guyana or is a descendant of any of the native or aboriginal peoples of Guyana. Amerindian Village Council A “Village Council” is defined in section 2 of the Amerindian Act as having been established under the authority of the Amerindian Act, the Annai District Council, Kanashen Village Council, Baramita Village Council and any Village Council established by order of the Minister responsible for Amerindian Affairs. Amerindian means any citizen of Guyana who — (a) belongs to any of the native or aboriginal peoples of Guyana; or (b) is a descendant of any person mentioned in paragraph (a). The Protected Areas Act - The (a) "Amerindian Community" has the meaning assigned to it by the Amerindian Act. According to article 1, paragraph 1 (a), of ILO Convention 169, its scope embraces tribal as well as indigenous peoples. The latter are defined as those peoples who are descended from populations which inhabited the country, or the geographical region to which the country belongs, at the time of conquest or colonization or the establishment of present state boundaries and who, irrespective of their legal status, retain some or all of their own social, economic, cultural, and political institutions.
