Alawi definition

Alawi literally means “those who adhere to the teachings of Ali”, the son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad. They believe that Ali is the incarnation of the deity in the divine triad.84 Syria‟s 75% majority Sunni population considers the Alawi to be heretical because of their belief that Ali is Muhammad‟s successor, and their rejection of traditional Islamic restrictions.
