VSO word order may on principle be the reflection of very different clause structures. This chapter argues that for many languages where VSO order is attested (Semitic, Celtic, Romance, Greek), it reflects a particular clause structure, which I wiIl call a “VSO clause,” where the subject does not raise out of the c- command domain of the tense head of the clause:
