Refers to a squatter gaining possession of a piece of land due to the property being abandoned by the owner. If the owner has not tried to have the squatter evicted, this is possible even if the owner has not (in his own mind) abandoned the property. This could be the case, for example, if someone purchases a piece of land as an investment with full intent to develop or sell the property years into the future, but they leave it to sit for many years. Also referred to as squatter’s rights.
