Perhaps the most characteristic of Christian doctrines is that of the Holy Trinity, one godhead in three persons: Father, incarnate Son and Holy Spirit. This doctrine developed out of various attempts to understand the relationships between God; Jesus, whom the Christian Scriptures designate as “Son of God;” and the Holy Spirit, whom the Scriptures sometimes describe as sent by God, at other times as given by Christ; and all this within the context of an expressly monotheistic system of belief.
