WHEREAS in recent years telematics systems and information services have been deployed in order to increase safety, efficiency and environmental friendliness of inland waterway transport, commonly known as River Information Services, acronym RIS, which is specified in Directive 2005/44/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 September 2005 on harmonised river information services (RIS) on inland waterways in the Community;
