Local Context: The business industry profile of East Ayrshire is characterised by under-representation of service, technology and business industries; a legacy of brownfield and despoiled land generally unsuited for the needs of modern companies; and increased commuting to the Glasgow conurbation. In addition, while it is recognised that there are good transport connections, the challenge in respect of transport is to develop an integrated and sustainable transport system to further improve accessibility to town centres, particularly Kilmarnock, and the road and rail links between East Ayrshire communities and beyond. 1. There were 2,600 ‘VAT Registered Businesses’ in East Ayrshire in 2006, a rate of 26 businesses per 1,000 adults, and 27 businesses per 1,000 adults in 2007 (Scottish average is 31/1,000 in 2006 and 33/1,000 in 2007).2.
