The agricultural sector accounts for about a quarter of the United Republic of Tanzania’s GDP, approximately one-fifth of its exports, and sustains the livelihood of two-thirds of its population. In addition, more than three quarters of the poor are engaged in this sector. A large variety of crops are grown throughout Tanzania, but much of its land remains uncultivated despite having relatively abundant water resources compared to other sub-Saharan African countries.
