The Commission was established under the Vocational Education and Training Act 1990 (Vic) and continues in operation under and subject to the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Act). The functions of the Commission are set out in section 3.1.2(1) of the Act, and include to provide for the delivery of vocational education and training (VET) in Victoria by registered education and training organisations and the provision of further education in TAFE institutes.
