Storehouse model and predictive role At its base, Xxxxxxxxx’x model of memory is explicitly a storehouse-type model that rings strong initial bells of Xxxxx. He talks explicitly of ‘this storehouse’,12 ‘the fields and vast palaces of memory, where are the treasuries of innumerable images of all kinds of objects’,13 and ‘[m]emory’s huge cavern’14. In a significant step forward from Xxxxx, however, Xxxxxxxxx anticipated the rather recent realisation15 that memory’s role is not simply one of recollection; it also has a predictive function. In modernity, such a realisation is driven by the necessity of explaining memory in evolutionary terms as either adaptation or exaptation. In late antiquity, such a rationalisation was of course unavailable, but for Xxxxxxxxx it seems to have been unnecessary. ‘Out of the same abundance in store, I combine with past events images of various things, whether experienced directly or believed on the basis of what I have experienced; and on this basis I reason about future actions and events and hopes’.16 This predictive role becomes important when we begin to consider what sort of theory of memory could be used to underpin all of Xxxxxxxxx’x observations. Specifically, we will be interested in this thesis in the question (not directly addressed by Xxxxxxxxx) of what things a person should remember best, and what she should remember least well.
