Stopcocks. Make sure you know where the main stopcock is for turning off your water supply. It is usually under the kitchen sink. If you cannot find it or are not sure, ask your Estate Officer to show you. On some estates, heating and hot water is supplied to each flat from a central boiler. If your home is heated in this way, we will charge you the cost of this with your rent. It is wise to have some form of emergency heating in your home like an electric fire. We can lend you an electric fire if you are elderly or have a baby and your heating has broken down. We only have a limited number of these appliances. We spread the cost of your heating and hot water over the year. We normally provide heating from 1 October to 30 April. On most estates, your Estate Officer will be available at the Estate Office. Most Estate Offices are open between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday with some offices operating a late night once a week and occasional Saturday mornings. Please check with your Estate Office as to their hours of opening. Outside these hours, a notice outside the Estate Office tells you who is on duty and a message will be left on the office telephone number. On some estates, we provide an Estate Officer who is normally available if there is an emergency. Please remember that outside normal working hours the Estate Officer on duty will only deal with emergencies such as fire, flooding and break-ins. If the emergency involves 82 police, London Fire Brigade or ambulance, you should always dial 999 or alternatively 101.
