Resident Nurse. A registered nurse whose clinical experience after graduation is less than six (6) months, or a registered nurse who is returning to practice with no current clinical training or experience. A resident nurse shall be assigned under the close and direct supervision of a designated preceptor(s) and shall have limited responsibilities as defined by the supervisor. Residency shall not exceed six (6) continuous months unless extended in writing for an additional three (3) months when mutually agreed to by the Employer and individual nurse involved. A resident nurse who is required to function continuously without close and direct supervision and who is assigned the same level of responsibilities as a staff nurse shall be compensated at the staff nurse rate of pay. Nurses working under close and direct supervision shall not be assigned charge duty or as a team leader without a staff nurse being present in the unit, except in cases of emergency.

A Resident Nurse shall be assigned to an orientation program that provides progressive experiences. A Resident Nurse shall be assigned under the supervision of more experienced nurses and the guidance of a designated preceptor. A Resident Nurse is expected to perform tasks learned in a basic nursing program. The Resident Nurse will be oriented to any new policies, procedures and tasks unique to the Hospital or those that the nurse is uncomfortable in performing. Resident Nurses will not be assigned Charge Nurse responsibilities. It is an expectation that the period of residency will not exceed three (3) months.

A change from resident nurse to staff nurse shall not alter a nurse’s benefit accrual.

Residency shall not exceed six (6) continuous months and for an additional three (3) continuous months when mutually agreed to in writing by the Employer and the individual nurse involved. Close and direct supervision shall be defined as working in conjunction with other nurses. During the review period, nurses working under close and direct supervision shall not be scheduled as the only nurse on the unit for a regularly scheduled shift.

A resident nurse shall work under the close supervision of more experienced nurses with the assistance of the Clinical Manager or designee as needed until such time as the nurse proves capable of handling the full-time responsibilities of a general duty staff nurse; however, residency shall not exceed six (6) continuous months unless extended in writing for an additional three (3) months when mutually agreed to by the Employer and the individual nurse involved. A resident nurse will be evaluated by his or her supervisor not less than every three months, after written consultation with staff nurses with whom the resident nurse has worked most closely.

A resident nurse will be assigned a registered nurse preceptor who works on the same shift and unit as the resident for the purpose of close direction and support during the residency period. Residency shall not exceed six (6) continuous months unless extended in writing by the Hospital. A resident nurse shall not be assigned charge duty, team leader, or precepting functions. A nurse who is accepted into a residency program shall, at time of acceptance, be assigned an FTE which shall become effective upon successful completion of the residency period. At least two weeks prior to the end of residency, the nurse shall apply for a posted position on the unit equal to or greater than assigned FTE status. The nurse shall move into his/her new position at the end of the residency and complete a probationary period of thirty (30) calendar days.
Resident Nurse. A resident nurse is a newly graduated registered nurse or a registered nurse who is hired or transfers to a department that requires specialized training and new skill development. A resident nurse may be offered a residency or will be assigned a preceptor when no formal residency program is available or offered. The residency program consists of classroom hours and a precepted orientation based on the resident's skill level and tailored to meet the resident's need. A nurse who participates in a formal residency shall be required to sign a residency agreement which is attached to this Agreement as Appendix A.
