Republic of South Africa. A comprehensive guideline for utilisation and disposal of wastewater sludge was developed in South Africa in 20062. The guideline was developed to selected appropriate management options for the specific sludge production from WWTPs. The guideline comprises five volumes, whereby volume 2 defines the requirements for the agricultural use of sludge. The key principle is to select the sludge disposal option based on a simple classification according to three sludge characteristics parameters: Microbiological Class, Stability Class; and Pollutant Class. The pollution level is defined by the presence of heavy metal contents as shown in Table 2-3 and compared to the current EU regulation in place.
