Only the lowest of the following factors may be used as a salary exclusion for income tax purposes: (1) the amount designated as a housing allowance by the church; (2) the amount actually used for housing and related costs. The pastor should request the amount to be designated as a housing allowance, and the church council must take official action to confirm the amount. This action should be taken for the coming year prior to January. The designated amount may be adjusted at any time with the agreement of the pastor and the official action of the board.
