Palms. Palms will be pruned once, in July each year after seedheads have formed. No green fronds will be removed. Only ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ and broken fronds will be pruned. All seedheads will be removed.
Palms a. Remove dead and dying fronds. b. Prune palm crown to no narrower than a 9 and 3 o’clock position. c. Remove loose frond sheaths along the entire length of the trunk. d. Remove fruit and flowers. e. Palm Skinning (hourly cost): Dead fronds, and parts thereof, including stubs, can be removed along the entire length of the trunk of each palm, leaving a clean unsheathed appearance slicked from the ground to approximately twenty-four to thirty-six (24” – 36”) inches from the base of the green fronds at the top of the tree. The frond stubs (cut close to trunk) can be left in place within a span of at least eighteen (18”) inches but no greater than thirty-six (36”) inches. The use of climbing spurs or spike shoes for the purpose of climbing palm trees is prohibited, except in an emergency situation (such as aerial rescue) or unless specifically approved by the Project Manager or Inspector. The Contractor shall be required to use an aerial tower with sufficient height to reach the crown for the purpose of pruning City Palm trees. A chainsaw may only be used on dead fronds. Use of a handsaw is required on green fronds and fruit/flowers. Handsaws and chainsaws will be cleaned between each palm with City-approved disinfectant.
Palms. A. Provide palms with straight trunks unless otherwise specified. Provide the clear trunk height specified, measured from the original soil line to the point in the canopy where the trunk caliper begins to taper abruptly. The practice of either burying taller palms below the original soil line of the root ball or raising short palms by exposing part of the root ball above the original soil line to achieve the specified height is not allowed. B. Root Ball Diameter 1. Date Palms: Provide 42 inch diameter root balls with a minimum depth of 36 to 42 inches. 2. Other Palms: Provide B&B root balls conforming to “Florida Grades & Standards.” Balls shall extend 9 to 12 inches beyond the lowest part of the trunk exclusive of exposed roots and persistent leaf bases and a minimum depth of 12 to 24 inches. If the palm has multiple trunks, the root ball shall extend out never less than 8 inches from the outside edge of the trunk cluster.

Contractor shall not remove green leaves and shall prune only dead or ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ leaves. Contractor shall remove all palm flower and fruit clusters by handsaw without damaging live tissue to prevent seedlings. Contractor shall make reasonable efforts to avoid removing leaves that are growing horizontally or upward (i.e., retain all leaves within a “9–3” frame). Contractor shall cut leaves close to the petiole base but shall not damage living trunk tissue. Contractor shall assess discoloration of lower palm leaves for nutritional deficiencies. Contractor shall not throw palm leaves or any other pruned material into any lake or other water body.
Palms. A. Except as modified below or where the requirements are not appropriate to the specification of palms, palms shall meet all the requirements of the tree or palm quality section above. B. Defronding, tying, and hedging: A. In preparing palm trees for relocation, all dead fronds shall be removed. B. All remaining fronds above horizontal shall be lifted up and tied together around the crown in an upright position. Up to 2/3 of the oldest live fronds can be removed; all fronds can be removed on Sabal palms. Do not tie too tightly, bind or injure the bud. Jute binder twine shall be used in tying up the fronds; wire will not be permitted. Fronds shall be untied within 14 days of planting; the project will not be accepted under substantial completion with the palm’s fronds tied. C. The Contractor shall not free-fall, drag, roll or abuse the tree or put a strain on the crown (bud area) at any time. A protective device shall be used around the trunk of the tree while lifting and relocating so as not to injure the bud, or scar or skin the trunk in any way.
