Catering to the poor and forgotten, the sick and the dying, she embraced AIDS sufferers, prostitutes and orphans equally, reminding us what consti- tutes true charity. When she died on Sept. 5, 1997, she left a hole in the world that will never be filled. Ironically, for all of the love and compassion Xxxxxxxx is president of St. Mary’s University in Calgary. we associate with Xxxxxx Xxxxxx, those who knew her rarely describe her as a warm and fuzzy person. Everyone fortunate enough to have met her describe a passionate but ferocious individual, one who had little time for bureaucracy, niceties or diplomacy. She could dress down a bureaucrat, business ty - xxxx, or a U.S. president without hesitation. A friend once told of a meeting where the world’s top CEOs pulled out their cheque- books after one of her presenta- tions. “I don’t want your money,” she purportedly informed them, “I want you to go back to your com- munity and make a difference.” And so they did. Our own professor of religious studies and theology, and CWL chair for Catholic studies, Dr. Xxxxxxx Xxxxxx, was fortunate to meet Xxxxxx Xxxxxx and, on one occasion, have an extended con- versation with her. While doing his doctorate studies at the The Idea of Canada: Letters to a Nation, Governor General Xxxxx Xxxxxxxx praises the passion and influence of Xxxxxx Xxxxxx, xxxx- cially her ability to encourage charity. Certainly her gift for gen- erating financial support for her missions is legendary; but so too is her message of hope and love for the unwanted and forgotten. It is here that we see the true focus of her passion and commitment. As Xxxxxxxx puts it, she reminds us that every effort we make, no matter how small...

NOW AVAILABLE miniPERM® - Bioreactor for protein production miniPERM® is an easy-to-handle bioreactor for the cultivation of cells in high densities and simultaneous production of cell products, e.g. monoclonal antibodies. Depending on the cell line, cell densities of more than 107 cells/ml and product concentrations of several mg/ml can be obtained. ✓ High cell densities ✓ High product concentrations ✓ Easy handling ✓ Multiple harvesting ✓ Range of cell culture volumes Applications s Hybridoma cells s Transfected cells s Biomass production s Virus-producing cells s Entomological cells s Plant cells nutrient module production module cell product Glucose Lactate NH4 + CO2 Cell O2 silicone membrane dialysis membrane Function The miniPERM® bioreactor is a membrane-based two-compartment system. A dialysis membrane subdivides the culturing chamber of the miniPERM® bioreactor into a production module (optionally 5, 35 or 50 ml cell culture volume) and nutrient module (400 ml medium volume). The small pore size of the dialysis membrane (MWCO 12.5 kD) prevents both the cells and released cell products from passing through the membrane. These are accumulated to high cell densities and product concentrations in the production module. Simultaneously, the metabolites released from the cells diffuse through the dialysis membrane from the production module into the nutrient module to be diluted or neutralised in the medium. The outer side of the production module consists of a thin O2 and CO2 permeable silicone membrane for optimal gas exchange.
