Georgia Power. A subsidiary of The Southern Company, Georgia Power is a regulated utility company in the business of generating, delivering, and selling electricity over most of the state. The company is committed to environmental stewardship and being a “citizen wherever we serve.” Georgia Power owns about 95,000 acres statewide, primarily associated with coal, hydro, and nuclear generating facilities, and has the authority to perform gopher tortoise population enhancement and habitat management activities at suitable selected sites on these properties. Georgia Power is also responsible for power line construction and maintenance, as well as vegetation management, on thousands of miles of power delivery right-of-way easements to ensure safety and reliability. These easements establish legal authority for the company to access the rights-of-way, and the freedom to implement best management practices to protect tortoises and tortoise habitat where applicable.
