eTNS Clause Samples
eTNS. The trigeminal nerve is the largest cranial nerve with one motor and three sensory routes. The motor innervates the muscles of mastication, with the trigeminal sensory nucleus innervating touch, pain and temperature sensation to the face. Sensory aspects convey proprioceptive sensation from the teeth, hard palate and muscles of mastication. eTNS received approval as a treatment in Europe in 2012 as an alternative treatment option in intractable epilepsy and depression in adults and children over the age of nine years. In eTNS low level currents are delivered to adhesive pads worn externally on the forehead over the trigeminal nerve. Efficacy of eTNS: The efficacy of eTNS was investigated by a double-blind randomised controlled trial of 50 patients; the responder rate for the active treatment group was 17.8% at 6 weeks, 36.2% at 12 weeks, and 40.5% at 18 weeks. (▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ et al., 2013). Mood also showed significant improvements in this group. (▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ et al., 2000) used a rat pentylenetetrazole model to assess the efficacy of eTNS and found that trigeminal nerve stimulation significantly reduced seizures in awake rats.
