Distemper. Distemper is an airborne, highly contagious, often fatal, multi-systemic viral disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems. It is spread mostly thru bodily secretions. Symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, fever above 105 degrees and bloody diarrhea. Symptoms come on VERY quickly, and the dog will typically refuse to eat. Treatment must be started ASAP with IV fluids and antibiotics to ▇▇▇▇ off secondary infections. Muscle ‘Ticks’ occur when the virus has spread into the nervous system. Distemper is not contagious to humans.
