Data Tier. Several spatial databases store and manage the geodata and hold them at the disposition of the logic tier for visualization and processing services. Thus, they support spatial functions and indexes, which provide better performance for retrieval and processing spatial data. The different datasets must not necessarily be on one central database, because the system is modular and the Logic Tier can deal with different data sources. The Data Tier is managed using a PostgreSQL database with the PostGIS spatial extensions because this solution is the most mature. This database management system supports the import from and export to all major spatial formats such as Shapefile, GeoTiff, GeoJSON, Well-Know-Text (WKT), etc.
