Common use of Barbados Clause in Contracts

Barbados. On November 30, 1966 Barbados became an independent state. In a note dated February 10, 1967 to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Prime Minister and Minister of External Affairs made a statement reading in part as follows: β€˜β€˜I have the honour to inform you that the Government of Barbados, conscious of the de- sirability of maintaining existing legal relation- ships, and conscious of its obligation under international law to honour its treaty commit- ments, acknowledges that many treaty rights and obligations of the Government of the United Kingdom in respect of Barbados were succeeded to by Barbados upon independence by virtue of customary international law.
