APPLICABILITY OF ISO 26262. ‌ Designing, developing and manufacturing electronic safety devices for motor vehicles requires a systematic planned process. The International Standards Organization (ISO) has developed ISO 26262:2011 as an international standard for providing functional safety for motor vehicle electrical and electronic equipment. Sections of this process standard may be applicable to the development and certification of ASDs and may be of particular use to consumer electronics suppliers unfamiliar with automotive safety system development and validation. ISO 26262 is a new standard and as such has had limited application in automotive product development. ISO 26262 introduces automotive safety integrity levels (ASIL) to identify critical safety elements, much like a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and provides guidance concerning systematic identification and management of safety risks to those developing electrical and electronic systems and components for motor vehicles. It covers system design, technical requirements, hardware, software, embedded software and the hardware-software interface. None of the potential ASD suppliers interviewed had any significant experience developing safety systems utilizing ISO 26262.
