A Probationary Appointment Clause Samples
A Probationary Appointment is an Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor leading to consideration for the simultaneous granting of Tenure and Promotion to the rank of Associate Professor, or an Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor leading to consideration for the granting of Tenure.
1.2.1 Such an Appointment is open to applicants inside and outside the University and must be advertised according to Senate rules, in accord with the Article Employment Equity. A Probationary Appointment is for a specified period to permit mutual appraisal for both the Member and the University; it implies that the University will give serious consideration to the granting of Tenure in accord with the provisions of the Article Promotion and Tenure. It does not imply that the granting of Tenure is inevitable.

A Probationary Appointment is an Appointment leading to consideration for a Continuing Appointment. Subject to Clauses 4.1.1, 4.1.2, 4.2, and 4.2.1 below, the maximum total length of the probationary period shall be six (6) years.
4.1 A Member appointed to the Rank of General Librarian or General Archivist is expected to exhibit potential for successful performance in Professional Practice and potential for successful performance in Academic Activity and Service. This is the Rank at which a professional career at the University normally begins for Members with little or no experience.
4.1.1 A Member appointed to the Rank of General Librarian or General Archivist shall have a probationary period of two (2) years ending in:
a) promotion to a Probationary Appointment at the Assistant Librarian or Assistant Archivist rank, in accordance with the provisions of the Article Promotion and Continuing Appointment; or
A Probationary Appointment. A Probationary Appointment stipulates a terminal date in the letter of appointment but is under the provisions listed under "Probation" in this article, and the conditions of Article [Tenure]. A Tenured Appointment, which may be offered to members on Probationary Appointments in accordance with the provisions of Article and which, if offered as a Associate Professor, Professor, Professional Associate or Professional Associate
A Probationary Appointment is an Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor on either the Tenure Track or the Teaching Scholar Track, as specified in the Letter of Appointment, leading to consideration for the granting of Tenure or Continuing status, respectively.
1.5.1 A Probationary Appointment on the Tenure Track is an Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor leading to consideration for the simultaneous granting of Tenure and Promotion to the rank of Associate Professor, or an Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor leading to consideration for the granting of Tenure.
1.5.2 A Probationary Appointment on the Teaching Scholar Track is an Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, TS leading to consideration for the simultaneous granting of Continuing status and Promotion to the rank of Associate Professor, TS, or an Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, TS leading to consideration for the granting of Continuing status.
