Appendix G. Alignment with District’s Strategic Plan • Develop Great Educators and Leaders (Goal 1). City Year increases teacher effectiveness by supporting differentiation of instruction during the school day and reinforcing learning through extended day or before and after-school programs. City Year AmeriCorps members work collaboratively with teachers to identify ways to best support students. Additionally, City Year is building a pipeline of diverse, talented teachers. Thirty percent of graduating City Year AmeriCorps members are interested in a career as a teacher or school administrator. City Year has worked to design a pathway for AmeriCorps members to work in education, particularly as teachers in urban classrooms. AmeriCorps members across the country have already demonstrated that they are strong teacher candidates. • Engage Parents, Caregivers, & Community (Goal 2). AmeriCorps members help schools to engage families in their student’s learning by making calls home when a student is absent, calling family members to report significant student achievements, and organizing special events for family members and the community, such as literacy fairs. • Develop the Whole Child (Goal 4). City Year AmeriCorps members serve in schools throughout the school day, collaborating with teachers and school leaders to provide additional support for students who are struggling academically and socio-emotionally. Over the course of the entire school day (including before-school, lunch, recess and after- school programs), AmeriCorps members provide these students with research-based literacy and mathematics interventions designed to help students improve their academic performance.
