As an orthopaedic surgeon, I vehemently oppose the introduction of this agreement, as it seeks to reduce patient choice, provider freedom and ultimately introduce a ‘managed care’ system of healthcare providers similar to the United States. Australia needs to remain independent with the provision of private healthcare, to respect patient choices, wishes and freedom in determining which doctor and which hospital they utilise rather than being bound to health fund rules. This in the end will stifle competition and result at the end of the day in further exclusions and limitations upon what consumer’s healthcare actually provide.
