The Beach Closings XXX has been listed as impaired due to poor historical water quality since the very first Niagara River Remedial Action Plan (RAP) Stage 1 Report (1993). Recent source-tracking efforts identified the high priority source(s) of contamination affecting water quality at the beach and actions required to improve water quality at the beach, including (but not limited to) an area located within Simcoe Park, where three storm outlets all having confirmed sources of human E. coli with levels ranging from 64- 367 CFU/100 mL in all grab samples. A key recommendation of the source-tracking study to minimize bacterial contamination and improve water quality is the installation of a bioswale in Simcoe Park where these three storm outlets meet to filter water before it re-enters the storm system. Over the past three years, these track-down studies also identified key remedial actions needed to address the various issues impacting QRB. The studies identified locations within the Town of NOTL that had issues with stormwater, sewage, infrastructure, wildlife sources, and improper sewer connections that were allowing sources of e.coli/sewage into the storm systems leading to the beach and impacting QRB. With the detailed information from the study report, the RAP partners can now proceed with implementing the priority remedial actions required to improve the Niagara River’s water quality in order to re-designate the Beach Closings XXX to Not Impaired—eventually leading to the AOC being delisted. The activities that will be implemented through this project are critical for making progress on addressing the stormwater issues related to Beach Closings for the Niagara River.
