First, through the study of literature (each grade level reads a mix of fiction and nonfiction), teachers develop comprehension with an aim of meeting the Common Core Standards. A standards-based unit creation tool helps teachers develop standards-aligned questions for novels, and teachers share a base of top-quality units as part of regular professional development and common planning time. In addition to building comprehension through literature, students will learn to analyze text. Using shorter pieces of poetry and nonfiction, students learn to identify question types and return to text to find answers. Students will make both written and oral presentations to demonstrate comprehension.
