More Definitions of U3O8

U3O8 means triuranium octoxide;
U3O8 or “uranium oxide” means a concentrated uranium oxide obtained by milling a mixture of uranium oxide ore to produce “pulped” ore. This is then bathed in sulphuric acid to leach out the uranium. Yellowcake is what remains after drying and filtering and is usually represented by the formula U3O8. It is radioactive, forming a coarse powder which is insoluble in water and contains about 80% uranium oxide (U3O8), and melts at approximately 2,878°C. The yellowcake produced by most modern mills is actually brown or black, not yellow; the name comes from the colour and texture of the concentrates produced by early mining operations. This fine powder is packaged in drums and sent to a conversion plant that produces uranium hexaflouride (UF6) as the next step in the manufacture of nuclear fuel.
