Special form radioactive material may be considered as a component of the containment system.
Special form radioactive material shall have at least one dimension of not less than 5 mm.
Special form radioactive material means radioactive material that satisfies the following conditions: (1) It is either a single solid piece or is contained in a sealed capsule that can be opened only by destroying the capsule; (2) The piece or capsule has at least one dimension not less than 5 mm (0.2 in); and (3) It satisfies the requirements of §71.75.
Special form radioactive material manufactured to a design which had received unilateral approval by the competent authority under the 1973, 1973 (as amended), 1985 or 1985 (as amended 1990) Editions of IAEA Safety Series No. 6 may continue to be used when in compliance with the mandatory programme of quality assurance in accordance with the applicable requirements of 1.7.3.
