No students are assigned to independent study if this is not a choice they have made. All students who choose independent study have the continuing option of classroom instruction. Assignments: In alignment with board policy, assignments are due on the date set by teachers, unless a prior exception has been approved by the teacher. Teachers will clarify the quality and quantity of work expected for each assignment. After three missed assignments during any period of 45 school days, or two consecutively missed appointments with the supervising teacher, without valid reasons, an evaluation will be made to determine whether independent study is an appropriate educational strategy for this student. Should it be determined that independent study is not an appropriate choice, the student will be returned to a regular classroom setting within the district.

All students who choose Independent Study must be offered the alternative of in-person classroom instruction, and they must have the continuing option of returning to the classroom. Voluntary Return to Campus within 5 Instructional Days: For students participating in independent study for 15 school days or more, that request a student's return to in-person instruction from Independent study, will have their child returned to in-person instruction on campus within 5 instructional days of the date of the request. The Independent Study teacher will notify the school counselor through the established process at which point the counselor will facilitate a return to in-person instruction meeting with the student, providing them with their schedule of in-person classes.

All students who choose Riverside Virtual School must have the continuing option of returning to a classroom setting at their school of residence. Student’s Agreement – I understand that: ● I am required to complete my assigned work by the due date, as listed on the Independent Study Assignment Sheet and turn it in on the first day when I return to school. ● I am entitled to textbooks and supplies, supervision by a certificated teacher, and all services and resources received by other students enrolled in my grade. If a student with exceptional needs has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), as defined in Education Code 56026, the student may participate in independent study, if the student’s individualized education program specifically provides for that participation. If a parent or guardian of an individual with exceptional needs requests independent study, the student’s individualized education program team shall make an individualized determination as to whether the student can receive a free appropriate public education in an independent study placement. A student’s ability to work independently, the student’s need for adult support, or the student’s need for special education or related services shall not preclude the individualized education program team from determining that the student can receive a free appropriate education in an independent study placement.
