The County of San Diego, in recognition of individual rights to work in a safe, healthful and productive work place, has adopted a requirement for a drug and alcohol free work place, County of San Diego Drug and Alcohol Use Policy C-25, available on the County of San Diego website. This policy provides that all County-employed Contractors and Contractor employees shall assist in meeting this requirement.

The University of Washington, UW Medicine, and/or Harborview Medical Center has the right to update, develop, and/or implement a policy on drug and alcohol free workplace. Prior to taking such action, the Employer will provide sixty (60) days’ notice to affected employees and the union.

Marijuana remains an illicit drug based on federal law despite Washington law. Pursuant to the provisions of the Drug-Free Work Place Act, qualifying institutions are required to make an ongoing good faith effort to maintain a drug-free workplace. Therefore, for purposes of this article, the terms “drugs” and “controlled substances” include marijuana and/or medical marijuana and is an illicit drug.
