RISKS AND BENEFITS. We think that taking part in this research study will help your child think about how they learn. This study will also help scientists learn about ways to teach science. We think that taking part is this study has little to no risk. However, if your child becomes upset answering a survey question they can skip the question or take a break. If they continue to be upset, we will stop their participation and let you know. Privacy and Confidentiality: During and after this study, we will protect your child’s privacy. We will not print your child’s name or other any other information about them. The information we collect will be confidential (private). However, people whose job is it to protect students who take part in research studies, such as the University of Hawaii Committee on Human Studies, are allowed to look at the information we collect. This form and your child’s surveys will be kept in a locked drawer in our office and destroyed when the study is over. Optional Participation: Taking part in this study is optional. Your child will need to do the OPIHI schoolwork with their class, but they do not have to join the study part of OPIHI. You are free to remove your child from this study at any time. Your child is also free to remove themselves at any time. To remove your child from this study, let me or your child’s teacher know. Your child may also let me or their teacher know. Taking part in this study will not affect your child’s grades or their relationship with their teacher. If your child does not participate in the study, their teacher will give them a different activity to do during the survey.
