Positive train control definition

Positive train control means a system designed to prevent collisions between trains, overspeed derailments (derailments caused when a train exceeds speed limits), incursions into established work zone limits, and the movement of a train through an improperly positioned switch.
Positive train control. ’ means a system designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, overspeed derailments, incursions into established work zone limits, and the movement of a train through a switch left in the wrong position, as described in subpart I of 49 CFR part 236.
Positive train control. (PTC) means an advanced system designed to automatically stop a train before certain accidents occur. In particular, PTC is designed to prevent: • Train-to-train collisions; • Over speed derailments; • Incursion into an established work zone; and • Movement through a main line switch in the improper position. • Other functions are applicable within the requirements as specific conditions warrant.
