Culturally relevant definition

Culturally relevant means incorporating awareness, understanding, and responsiveness to the beliefs, values, customs, and institutions (family, religious, etc.) and ethnic heritage of individuals or those identified cultures of persons with specific disabilities such as deafness, into training, treatment, and services designed to impact upon, or meet the needs of individuals or groups.
Culturally relevant means children see and experience themselves, their families and culture reflected in the classrooms. They experience their full identities affirmed.
Culturally relevant means pedagogy and practices that propose the following: students must experience academic success, students must develop and/or maintain cultural competence, and students must develop a critical consciousness through which they challenge the status quo of the current social order.
