Whole System. Relationships The service will integrate with other local community services including local GPs through formal pathways. The service will develop innovative technological approaches (such as PACS and other diagnostic technologies) to link with other providers to assess patients. The provider will develop relationships with other local stakeholders as part of the development and promotion of the MIU service; this will include local businesses and local schools. The provider will utilise existing, or form new, local community representative groups to assist with service improvement and developments. 2.4 Interdependencies The service has several interdependencies; they include local GPs and local secondary care hospital services. The MIU service is dependant on these services accepting patient referrals to enable continuity of care without patients having to make a repeat MIU attendance for the same episode. The service is dependant on the on-site x-ray service to enable timely x-rays and reporting to ensure patients can be seen, treated and discharged without onward referral to secondary care where appropriate. The service is also dependant on the local ambulance service adhering to the pre-agreed clinical protocols (see appendix) for MIU accepted patients to avoid an unnecessary delay in the patients care if they then require an onwards journey to A&E. This dependency also includes locally agreed arrangements between the ambulance service and the MIU provider for notifying the MIU of ambulance arrivals to allow for the prompt clinical handover. The service is dependant on other support services providing an appropriate response, in particular non-emergency patient transport service for patients requiring and eligible for transportation following their onward referral. 2.5 Relevant networks and screening programmes The MIU provider may be required to participate in local urgent care network meetings as required and provide ad hoc information about activity, particularly at seasonal times of pressure on the whole emergency and urgent care system (winter and summer). The provider is expected to develop a business continuity plan which can be shared with the whole health economy, particular during the winter months. The MIU provider may be required to participate in national reviews of urgent care services.
