Surgical. 608. Medical-Surgical: Registered Nurses constitute 100% of the care providers in the medical-surgical zones for the purposes of determining RN to patient ratios. The RN to patient ratios will be maintained at 1:4 with further decreases to ratios made based on acuity to 1:3 as required under Title 22. Based on acuity ratings, and until such time as critically ill patients are transferred to Critical Care, such patients shall be assigned 1:1 or 1:2 RN to patient ratios. Charge Nurses will not be given patient assignments except in unavoidable circumstances. The Registered Nurse assigned to the care of a chemotherapy patient shall not be assigned more than two (2) additional patients when the acuity level of the chemotherapy patient is classified as above average or almost constant care. Nurses assigned to administer specialized treatments such as chemotherapy and peritoneal dialysis to patients outside their home units shall be relieved of patient duties and assignments in their home unit until they return back to their home units.
