Lewisham Primary Care NHS Trust Board recognises its obligations and responsibilities with regard to the protection of patients, staff and members of the public from Health Care Associated Infections. This includes all activities with regard to patient care, both directly provided by the PCT and that commissioned from other providers and organisations. The mechanisms by which the PCT has fulfilled and plans to continue to fulfil its commitments are: • Dr Xxxxx Xxxxx – Director of Public Health was appointed Director of Infection Prevention and Control in January 2004. This post is accountable directly to the PCT board. • To continue to ensure that infection control is included in the PCT assurance framework. • To receive and support an annual infection control programme including regular audit visits to all areas providing either directly provided or contracted patient services, education of staff and access to appropriate and timely infection control advice. • To continue to ensure there are adequate resources available to deliver the annual infection control programme, including the continuing post of a full-time infection control specialist. • To continue to ensure that policies and procedures with respect to infection control are available and regularly reviewed. All policies are currently available both in hard copy at all clinical locations and on the PCT intranet. • To continue to receive the annual infection control report and ensure this report is available for public inspection on the PCT internet site. • To continue to support a programme of new builds and building refurbishment to ensure that all patients are cared for in clean and well-appointed clinical environments. • To ensure that quality and patient safety are in the forefront of all commissioning of patient services, including Practice Based Commissioning.
