Sickness Allowance. Employees unable to work due to illness may be eligible for illness pay. Effective January 1, 2015, all regular full-time hourly employees who are unable to perform their work due to illness may be eligible for sick pay for the time they would have regularly worked in accordance with such benefits provided to other hourly paid employees in Duke Energy not represented by the Union. Employees desiring to use sick leave for any doctor’s appointments including routine physical examinations, dental appointments or eye examinations, must notify their supervisor at least forty eight (48) hours prior to the beginning of the work schedule. Each such absence must be certified as bona fide by a licensed practitioner and will be limited to such time as is necessary for such appointments not to exceed 24 hours per calendar year (26 bi-weekly pay periods). Any employee who abuses the sickness allowance pay or Short-Term Disability benefits by engaging in deceptive behaviors or providing fraudulent documentation will be subject to corrective action by the Company, and if a member of the Union, also by the Executive Board of the Local Union. The above provisions do not apply to temporary employees who may be hired from time to time.

Application for sickness leave for more than one day must be supported by a valid medical certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner, a Chinese medical practitioner or a registered dentist specifying the number of days for which the Employee is unfit for work and the nature of the sickness or injury on account of which the Employee is unfit for work. Any sickness leave taken without the support of a valid medical certificate will be deemed to be unpaid or annual leave as appropriate. Any paid sickness leave taken by the Employee will be deducted from the sickness day credits accumulated by the Employee in accordance with applicable law.
