Sick Leave During Vacation. Where an employee qualifies for sick leave due to illness or injury during the period of vacation time, sick leave shall displace vacation leave. An illness or injury occurring while the employee is on scheduled vacation time shall not be accepted as a claim for sick leave benefits unless recuperation involves hospitalization or confinement to bed by order of a medical practitioner. Written medical verification of such illness or injury and hospitalization or confinement must be provided to the Employer in order for the employee to be eligible for sick leave benefits.
Sick Leave During Vacation. If an employee becomes ill or injured while on vacation, that employee may use sick leave in lieu of vacation days for the period of such illness or injury. Additionally, the employee who needs to make funeral arrangements or to attend the funeral of an immediate family member may use Article 11.5 in lieu of vacation.

An employee who becomes ill while on vacation may have such period of illness charged to his accumulated sick leave provided that immediately upon return to duty, the employee submits to his department head a written request for sick leave and a written statement signed by his physician describing the nature and dates of illness, and the department head recommends and the City Manager approves granting of such sick leave. The employee may request an extension of vacation due to illness, subject to the approval of the department head and City Manager.

The Employee is required to provide a medical document of proof of the hospitalization or confinement.

Sick leave may be substituted for vacation interrupted where it can be established by the Nurse to the satisfaction of the Employer that an illness or accident occurred prior to vacation and that illness or accident was such that the vacation of the Nurse was interrupted.

In the event an employee is ill or entitled to bereavement leave during vacation leave, the Employer will charge the amount of time the employee was ill and the period of recovery to the employee’s sick leave credits and will reinstate the employee’s vacation leave credits accordingly. The period of vacation shall, by mutual agreement between the employee and the Employer, be either added to the vacation period or reinstated for use at a later date. Satisfactory substantiation of illness and the period of recovery must be provided to the Employer in order for the vacation period to be adjusted.
