Shift Selections. Qualified employees will be allowed to exercise their shift preference within their respective classifications and department, based upon their department seniority, except in those instances where the approval of such preference will place an unreasonable hardship upon the Department. If two or more employees have equal seniority within the department, the employee with the greater bargaining unit seniority shall be accorded the position. Changes of shifts pursuant to this provision may be exercised once each calendar year. All shift changes within the department shall occur at one time, on a date to be selected by the Superintendent in the month of January of each year.

Shift Selections. (a) The Parties agree that a shift selection process should occur where deemed necessary.

Shift Selections. Shift selections, except special assignments (Detective or School Resource Officer), shall be made on the basis of seniority. Shift selections shall be posted by October 1 of each year. The employee selection shall be completed and posted by October 15 each year. The selections shall be for the periods of January 1 through June 30 and July 1 through December 31 of each year. Shift changes will take effect the closest payroll period to the shift selection. Should a shift vacancy, the Employer desires to fill, occur: if the vacancy is for a period of less than three months, it will be filled at the Chief’s sole discretion; if the vacancy is for 3 months or more, it shall be posted and filled from names submitted, based upon seniority; if there are no volunteers, the Chief shall appoint the least senior employee to that position.

Except in emergencies, the Employer will provide 48 hours notice of such shift change. If less than 48 hours notice is provided, overtime will be paid for such changed shifts worked during the 48 hours. Employees will be returned to their normal shift as soon as possible provided they receive at least nine (9) hours off work between shifts. Notice will not be required if a change is to return an Employee to his normal shift. Employees will be permitted to trade shifts with the Supervisor’s approval. No overtime will be paid for such trades.

Shift Selections. The Employer will permit employees that have completed their probationary period to indicate a preference for shift assignments. Employees will be scheduled for shift assignments on the basis of preference, according to departmental seniority, except where operational requirements of the department preclude such assignments. For each pick, employees will have three (3) of their regularly scheduled work days to submit their requests. If an employee does not submit within three (3) of their regularly scheduled work days, the Employer may bypass to the next employee in seniority order and continue down the list. Shift selections will be conducted in as close to 6-month intervals as will facilitate an orderly procedure by which the selections may be processed in advance. Shift rotations will be on a quarterly basis.
