Rock Fill. The use of frozen material in embankments will not be permitted. Frozen rock fill material shall be allowed to thaw and dry prior to placement in an embankment and shall not be placed on frozen material. A geotechnical consultant shall test and confirm that the gravel borrow material will be suitable for embankment construction when thawed and dry and that minimum compaction requirements can be achieved in cold weather conditions. Where the minimum specified compaction requirement is not achieved prior to the rock fill material freezing the Contractor shall remove the frozen material, and any underlying frozen soils, replacing them with suitable non-frozen material. The Department may independently perform sampling and testing to verify the results. A Professional Engineer in good standing with Engineers Nova Scotia must certify to the Department’s Engineer that the rock fill material and embankment construction meet the requirements under the QMP, and the Department’s standard specifications, and will not adversely affect the highway embankment’s performance.

Rock Fill. Gabions shall be carefully filled with rock, either by machine or hand methods, maintaining alignment, avoiding bulges, and providing a compact mass that minimizes voids. Machine placement will require supplementing with handwork. Cells in any row shall be filled in stages so that depth of rock placed cells does not exceed depth of rock in adjoining cell by more than 300 mm. Along exposed faces, outer layer of stone shall be carefully placed and arranged by hand to ensure a neat, compact placement with a uniform appearance.
