Reduction in Pay. Reductions in pay for limited periods of time may be used as a sanction against employees in lieu of suspension generally after an oral and written reprimand. It can be used without previous discipline if the nature and severity of the misconduct warrant the discipline. Employees will be placed on steps in any pay reduction and the reduction will not exceed one (1) year.

Reduction in Pay. Where an employee is subject to a disciplinary suspension, the SFMTA may, with an employee’s agreement, have the employee serve the suspension through a temporary reduction in pay. An employee’s pay may be reduced up to 20% for sufficient time to result in a loss of pay equivalent to the pay that would have been lost during the suspension, had it been served, provided that in no event shall a reduction in pay have the effect of reducing an employee’s pay below any rate required by law.
