Public Office Leave. (a) An Employer shall grant a leave of absence without pay upon the request of any Nurse to run as a candidate in a Federal, Provincial, or Municipal election. If the Nurse withdraws as a candidate or is an unsuccessful candidate, she/he is entitled to return to her or his former position without loss of benefits provided that the Nurse gives two (2) weeks notice to the Employer of her/his intent to return unless mutually agreed to a shorter notice period.
(b) Any Nurse in the Bargaining Unit who is elected to full-time office in the Federal, Provincial, or Municipal level of Government shall be granted a leave of absence without pay, for a term not exceeding five (5) years.
(c) Upon return, the Nurse will be placed in a position determined in accordance with the needs of the Employer at that time. The Nurse shall be placed on the same level of the increment scale the Nurse formerly occupied prior to commencing the leave of absence. The Nurse shall retain all benefits which accrued up to the time the Nurse commenced the leave of absence, including Service. The Nurse shall continue to accrue Seniority during the leave of absence.
Public Office Leave. Upon written request by the Union and the individual concerned, the Employer shall grant leave of absence without pay to any employee elected to and without pay while campaigning for his own election to public office. Such leave shall be for a maximum period of two (2) months in the case of his campaigning or for the term of such office in the case of his election.
Public Office Leave. An employee upon annual application may be granted a leave of absence without pay for up to six (6) years to serve in a public office. Upon return from such leave the employee shall be offered a position in the District for which he/she is certified and qualified.

(i) The Employer shall grant unpaid leave of absence without loss of seniority so that an employee may stand as a candidate for a federal, provincial or municipal elective public office up to and including eight (8) weeks provided written notice is given to the Employer a minimum of two (2) weeks in advance of the effective date of the leave.
(ii) An employee elected to a full-time public office shall be granted unpaid leave of absence for their term of office. During such leave of absence, seniority, benefits and entitlements shall be frozen and shall not continue to accrue or be utilized by that elected employee.
(iii) An employee elected or appointed to a public office, which is not of a full- time nature, may be granted time off work without pay subject to:
(a) written application being made to the Employer a minimum of five (5) days in advance; and,
(b) the unpaid leave of absence shall be taken in a minimum of one (1) day blocks unless otherwise agreed to by the employer; and,
(c) the aggregate of unpaid leave of absence shall not exceed ten (10) working days in any calendar year to conduct business or thirty (30) days if serving as Mayor or Chairperson. By mutual agreement of the parties, this leave may be extended.
(d) a request for extended leave shall not be unreasonably withheld.
(iv) An employee who obtains such leave of absence pursuant to (ii) above must return to work with the Employer within thirty (30) calendar days after completion of public office.
Public Office Leave. The Board may grant a leave of absence without pay to any tenured teacher to campaign for, or serve in, a public office, but any leave granted under this paragraph shall be for a period of not less than one (1) semester nor more than two (2) consecutive years.
